Are Downdraft Extractors Any Good?

Downdraft Extractors are the new kids on the block as far as kitchen appliances are concerned, and can be a neat method of ventilating your kitchen because the extractor is hidden from view when you’re not using it. They can be installed in any area of a kitchen and are a particularly attractive option when placing a hob on an island.

Early downdraft extractors were housed at the back of the hob, and when not used would be positioned below the worktop with just the top visible. When you needed to cook, you just pressed a button and the downdraft extractor would rise from the worktop ready to use.

Whilst revolutionary, there was a  major drawback with this design… Being positioned to the rear of the hob meant that it extracted vapours from the the rear hob rings fairly efficiently but struggled to pull vapours from the front rings being so far away.

Because of it’s lack of effectiveness and the amount of cabinet space that was required, kitchen designers were reluctant to specify this type of extractor, instead opting for traditional overhead options…

This was something that infuriated German kitchen designer, Willi Bruckbauer… With over 20 years of experience in the kitchen sector, the qualified master carpenter knew what people wanted from modern kitchens: to create a living space that meets the needs of the individual and makes them happy. Every day.

Extractor hoods were simply not part of this picture: they are loud, ineffective and visibly intrusive. They also restrict the possibilities when designing a kitchen. Willi Bruckbauer’s vision was to invent an effective vapour extraction system that meets the highest standards in terms of both technology and aesthetic appeal. Thanks to continuous experimentation and discovery, an innovative system was devised that draws off cooking vapours more effectively than ever before possible.

In 2005 Willi created a prototype tabletop extractor that was positioned in the middle of 4 cooking zones so that it extracted vapours from all zones effectively. In 2006 he patented the, game changing, Bora Professional cooktop extractor system.

Since the introduction of the Professional model, Bora have gone on to develop a versatile range of cooktop extractors that cater for a wide range of budgets and are the market leader for downdraft extraction in the world today. Other manufacturers are now getting onboard with the principle and releasing their own versions, some more effective than others.

THE BORA PRINCIPLE

Fresh Air

BORA draws off odours and grease particles directly from the cookware. This prevents cooking vapours from rising up and spreading annoyingly throughout the whole room.

The grease particles released during cooking are effectively trapped in the stainless steel grease filter. It is like cooking in the fresh air.

Clear View

No annoying head-height extractor hoods… BORA means freedom from the constraints of conventional extractor hoods. No edges or corners at head height. No stooped stance. No steam to block your view or cloud up your glasses. No restriction on visibility. Thanks to BORA, chefs are not trapped on their own but can interact with guests.

Simple to Clean

Why make things difficult when there is an easy option?  Cleaning conventional extractor hoods is laborious and time-consuming. In contrast, BORA products impress with outstanding everyday advantages, including when it comes to cleaning and maintenance. All three movable parts can be easily dismantled without any tools and cleaned in the dishwasher.

Effectiveness

A focus on the bare essentials. Conventional extractor hoods work extremely hard for a comparatively limited result.  BORA cooktop extractors are a smart and highly effective solution. The best evidence of this is the head-height Cleanrate of 100 %. This is made possible by the intelligent use of the flow speed and innovative motor technology, which suction away the vapour without any detours.

Best Materials

High functionality and long service life. High-quality materials which ensure an excellent degree of functionality and a long service life are united in a premium system with no compromises. We set design standards by using pure stainless steel and heavy-metal-free glass ceramic. We promise that cooking with BORA will offer long-lasting delight.

The Death of

Overhead Extraction

Instead of letting cooking vapours and odours rise in the first place, BORA cooktop extractors draw them away where they are created, directly extracting them from the pot, roaster, pan or grill on the cooktop. And they do this not by magic but by applying the basic principles of fluid mechanics.

With ongoing research and development by Bora, and other manufacturers, it really is the beginning of the end for overhead extraction which is why, since installing the first Bora hob in our showroom we have gradually removed all of our overhead extractors such is our belief in the downdraft principle.

Check out what happened when we put our first Bora hob though it’s paces back in 2018.
