What Drives Costs Up?

Every kitchen is different, but certain choices have a big impact on the overall cost. Understanding these helps you make informed decisions that balance style, performance, and budget.

Here are the main factors that tend to increase the price:

  • Premium door finishes
High gloss, real wood veneers, or glass-fronted doors take more time and care to produce, which adds to the cost but also gives a richer, more refined look.
  • Luxury worktops
Quartz, Dekton, and solid surface materials offer durability and visual impact but come at a higher price than laminate.
  • Large or open plan layouts
More space means more cabinetry, worktops, and installation time. The extra storage and design flexibility are worth it if you spend a lot of time in your kitchen.
  • Integrated lighting and accessories
Pull-out storage, internal drawers, lighting strips, and pocket doors all add convenience and a touch of luxury.
  • High performance appliances
Premium brands such as Bora, Miele, and Liebherr add sophistication and efficiency, but they can easily account for 25 to 40 percent of the total spend.
  • Project management and installation
Choosing a fully managed service means everything runs smoothly, from design to completion. You are paying for reliability, attention to detail, and peace of mind.

What Keeps Costs Down?

A well designed kitchen does not have to be expensive… Small decisions can make a big difference to the final figure without sacrificing quality or style.

Here are practical ways to control costs:

  • Laminate or compact laminate worktops
Modern laminates are super durable, look amazing, are easy to maintain, and cost significantly less than stone or composite materials.
  • Entry level or mid-range door styles
Schüller and Nobilia offer durable, great looking, low price, melamine faced door options that are super hard wearing and will keep your design affordable.
  • Standard appliance packages
Brands like AEG and Neff offer entry level appliance ranges which provide excellent performance at a lower cost than premium models.
  • Simpler layouts
Working with your existing plumbing and electrical positions can save thousands.
  • Fewer bespoke features
Features like pocket doors, butler’s pantries, or pull out storage  units look amazing but quickly increase cost.

Experiment with our German Kitchen Cost estimator to see how these choices influence the total. It is an easy way to test ideas and see what fits within your preferred range.

What Makes Some Companies Cheaper?

Lower prices can be appealing, but they often come from a different approach to quality and service…. Knowing what corners are cut helps you compare properly.

Cheaper providers may:

  • Use unbranded or imported flat pack cabinets
These can look good initially but tend to wear faster and may not have the precision or durability of German manufacturing.
  • Rely on subcontracted fitters
Independent installers can vary in skill and availability, which sometimes leads to inconsistent results.
  • Offer limited support after installation
Once the kitchen is fitted, you may find it harder to get help with adjustments, replacements, or warranty issues.
  • Exclude essential services
Some quotes cover only supply, leaving you to arrange fitting, delivery, or coordination with builders.

Choosing a company that balances price and reliability will save you frustration later.

Cheap can work if you understand what is included and are happy to manage more of the process yourself.

Lifetime Cost  vs  Initial Price

When planning a new kitchen, it is natural to focus on the number at the bottom of the quote. Yet the real value of a kitchen is revealed over the years you live with it.

Thinking about lifetime cost rather than just the initial spend can help you make smarter choices that last longer and perform better.

A well-made German kitchen is built for the long term. The materials, precision manufacturing, and attention to detail mean the cabinets and drawers stay smooth, the finishes remain consistent, and doors continue to align perfectly for decades.

By contrast, cheaper kitchens may look fine at first but can begin to show wear within a few years. Doors can swell, hinges loosen, and drawer runners wear down. Repairs or replacements soon add up, turning what seemed like a bargain into a costly mistake.

When you divide the total cost by the lifespan, a higher quality kitchen often works out cheaper per year of ownership.

The longer it lasts, the less you spend in maintenance, and the more value it adds to your home.

In short, the real cost of a kitchen is not what you pay today but how well it serves you every single day for the next twenty plus years.

Frequently Asked Questions about German Kitchen Pricing

Got questions about German kitchen pricing?

You’re not the only one — here are the most common questions we’re asked about costs, materials, and installation.

Every answer below has been written and verified by our design team in Cardiff, based on real projects and years of experience helping local homeowners plan their dream kitchens.

1. How much does the design stage cost or is it included?

Our standard design service is completely free and without obligation, and includes an initial consultation plus two full design presentations. By that point you will have a clear idea whether you would like to work with us.

We also offer a premium design service for £500, which gives you unlimited design revisions and allows you to take away detailed plans and elevations at any time.

If you proceed with your kitchen, the £500 is credited towards your final balance.

2. Can I get a cost estimate online and how accurate will it be?

Yes, you can get a very good idea of the cost of a German kitchen using our price estimator above.

>> German Kitchen Price Estimator

It gives an accurate guide based on real project data, helping you see how different layouts, finishes, and appliance levels affect your overall budget before you even book a design consultation.

3. What size counts as a small, medium or large kitchen for pricing?

Kitchen size is usually based on the number of units rather than the physical room dimensions.

As a general rule, a small kitchen includes around ten units, a medium kitchen around fifteen, and a large kitchen about twenty or more.

These figures help provide a fair price estimate when comparing quotes or using our kitchen price estimator.

4. Do warranties and after-care add extra cost to a kitchen?

No, not if you choose the right company. Aftercare should be part of the service and available for the lifetime of your kitchen. Most German manufacturers include a five-year warranty as standard, while appliances usually range from one to five years depending on the brand.

Be cautious of anyone claiming a twenty-five-year warranty on kitchen furniture, as the small print often makes it impossible to claim.

5. Do I have to pay a deposit and what is the payment schedule?

Your kitchen project is secured by a three-stage payment schedule: 33 percent as a sales deposit, 33 percent when your kitchen is placed into manufacture, and the final 34 percent one week before delivery.

Once that final payment is made and your kitchen has arrived at our warehouse, ownership passes to you.

This means that even if your project is delayed for any reason, your kitchen legally belongs to you and will remain safely stored until you are ready for delivery.

6. Do you offer finance or payment plans?

We don’t currently offer finance or third-party credit plans. That’s a conscious decision—we’ve found that most of our clients prefer to pay using their own funds or through personal finance arrangements.

By not offering in-house finance, we avoid interest markups, third-party fees, and keep our pricing clean and straightforward.

7. How can I reduce the cost of my kitchen without sacrificing quality?

You can keep costs within budget by choosing durable laminate worktops, entry-level appliances from trusted brands, reduce the amount of drawers and remove pull-out storage options.

Also choosing MFC door finishes instead of painted ones can reduce costs significantly and give the same look with a tougher, longer-lasting surface.

8. Do I pay extra for installation, plumbing and electrical work?

Your designer will discuss this early on and confirm whether you have your own fitter or prefer a complete supply-and-fit service.

The cost of installation depends on whether your kitchen is supplied on a dry-fit or full installation basis, both of which should be clearly stated in your contract. A dry fit covers furniture installation only, while a full service includes plumbing and electrical connections to existing supplies.

9. What is included in a fitted kitchen price?

A typical fitted kitchen price covers cabinets, plinths, décor panels, worktops, sinks & tap, appliances, and delivery, with installation offered as an optional extra.

All items should be clearly itemised on your quote, with the VAT amount shown.

Supply-and-fit projects will usually include appropriate management for the size and complexity of the job.

10. Why do prices vary so much between kitchen companies?

Kitchen prices differ because materials, build quality, design expertise, and installation standards vary widely.

Some companies will also include full project management and aftercare while others quote only for supply only, making direct comparisons difficult.

11. Are appliances included in the kitchen price or are they extra?

Appliances are usually included in your kitchen design unless you prefer to supply your own.

It’s definitely worth taking your designer’s advice on brands as they work closely with manufacturers and can recommend the most reliable options from real experience, and ordering everything together often saves money and prevents problems later if appliance issues arise.

12. How much extra does a kitchen island add to the cost?

If you are using the same number of units but configuring them as an island, the extra cost is usually between £1,500 and £3,500 to cover additional décor panels, worktop wastage from using a full slab, and the labour involved in routing power or plumbing to the island.

13. What finishes increase the kitchen cost significantly?

Certain finishes can raise the cost of a kitchen quite noticeably. Glass doors or splashbacks, real wood instead of MFC, and worktops made from Quartz or Dekton all sit at the higher end of the price scale.

Painted finishes also tend to cost more than melamine-faced versions, even though melamine is often the tougher, more practical option for everyday use.

14. What hidden costs should I budget for?

Hidden costs can sometimes arise when removing an old kitchen or preparing the space for installation. These might include repairing walls or floors, adding new electrical or plumbing supplies, or running services to an island. It’s best to discuss any potential extras with your designer early on so they can be allowed for as a sensible contingency in your budget.

15. Is a cheaper kitchen option worth it in the long run?

Yes and no. Choosing entry-level options from a quality brand can save money without shortening the life of your kitchen but buying from inferior brands that only look similar on the surface often costs more over time due to poor materials and shorter lifespans.

Always do your research before committing.

16. How does choosing German-engineered cabinetry affect the price?

It depends on the brand you choose. Ultra-premium names like Poggenpohl, Bulthaup, and Siematic can cost several times more than a mass-produced kitchen, but brands such as Schüller and Nobilia offer true German engineering for only around 10 to 20 percent more than a typical British kitchen.

In return, you get precision build quality and a lifespan that’s often two to three times longer.

17. Does relocating plumbing or walls significantly increase price?

Relocating plumbing can usually be acheived without too much cost if it can be routed behind or beneath your units, however, the cost can reach £500-£1,000 or more when pipes are moved further or if services needs to go into the floor.

Removing or relocating a wall can start from around £1,250-£1,750 for non-structural walls and rise significantly if the wall is load-bearing and needs steel beams, structural engineer input and additional finishing.

18. Will installing a German kitchen increase the resale value of my home?

Installing a German kitchen can increase the value of your home by around 3 to 6 percent, largely thanks to its longer lifespan and superior build quality.

Beyond the numbers, an expertly designed German kitchen improves the way you live every day and is a sound investment when it comes to adding value to your property.

19. How have kitchen prices changed recently due to materials and labour?

In the last five years — with pandemics, wars, fuel prices rocketing and economies tanking — we’ve seen material and labour costs rise by roughly 25 to 35 percent across the construction and renovation industry. In fact, a UK index found building material prices up 37 % since 2020.

Interestingly, as importers of German kitchens we’ve found that prices from our German manufacturers have remained far more stable, making them even more competitive than many British alternatives.

20. Is it cheaper to buy appliances through the kitchen company or from a retailer?

Appliance prices are usually very competitive when bought through your kitchen supplier, and in many cases you may qualify for a larger furniture discount when you order everything together.

It also makes delivery and installation far simpler, with one company coordinating the entire process. If any issues arise later, your kitchen company can work directly with the manufacturer to get them resolved quickly and without stress.

21. Does the cost of a quartz or granite worktop include templating and cut-outs?

Yes, most kitchen companies use specialist fabricators who handle the full process, including templating, manufacturing, and installation. The cost is based on your kitchen design and will include any sink, hob, or tap cut-outs shown on your plan. If you add extras such as upstands, socket cut-outs, or additional pieces later, these are usually charged separately.

22. Is it cheaper to use a local independent kitchen supplier instead of a big chain?

As a rough guide, an average kitchen with solid surface worktops and quality appliances breaks down to around 40 percent furniture, 30 percent worktops, and 30 percent appliances.
